I feel like a large part of what I&amp;#8217;ve recently posted has been too &amp;#8220;look-at-me&amp;#8221; and shallow&amp;#8230;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I think Facebook is a tool, and, aside from logistical stuff like event planning, it&amp;#8217;s best used to share beautiful, mutually beneficial, and inspiring things: meaningful photos, art, yet-to-be-answers questions, postulates, etc. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Too often, though, I use it to as a naive way to satisfy a craving for self-affirmation and an outlet for pride. I find myself taking place in idle and increasingly boastful conversation, and that&amp;#8217;s bad. Really, if I think about it, most of the time I&amp;#8217;m just talking to myself, since what I post usually doesn&amp;#8217;t get anyone thinking; any interaction those empty posts provoke might as well be scripted.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What it comes down to is this: this type of participation doesn&amp;#8217;t help anyone &amp;#8212; both me, the producer, or my readers &amp;#8212; be any happier or more content with life.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Certain features of Facebook promote this type of behavior, too. For instance, the Facebook newsfeed aggregates information using really crude heuristics. Those heuristics aren&amp;#8217;t disclosed, but it&amp;#8217;s pretty obvious that things like &amp;#8216;comment&amp;#8217; and &amp;#8216;like&amp;#8217; count account for what makes it past the popularity filter and what doesn&amp;#8217;t.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Well, I&amp;#8217;d argue that vapid content is more often liked and commented on than rich content, due to the circle-jerk nature of the internet and our need for instant gratification. It happens, and it&amp;#8217;s not really anyone-in-specific&amp;#8217;s fault, but what it results in is a lot of rambling and not a lot of conversation on quality content. When you log onto Facebook, you&amp;#8217;re presented with a wall of nothingness.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What&amp;#8217;s more is, I&amp;#8217;m not sure Facebook is really looking to address this issue. People participating in the endless search for instant-gratification means more traffic for them, where-as a system designed to promote thought and evoke complex emotion, is &lt;em&gt;slower &lt;/em&gt;in nature. When you&amp;#8217;re stricter on you&amp;#8217;re standards of quality, your rate of production slows, because it&amp;#8217;s difficult to produce. Subsequently, if content is richer, it&amp;#8217;s more likely to be of a higher density as well, and thus harder to consume.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A solution, assuming my conjectured opinion on Facebook being disinterested is wrong, might be kind of what Google did with circles, but perhaps implemented differently. This isn&amp;#8217;t a new idea and i&amp;#8217;m not trying to take credit for it, but: if there were a way to easily focus content toward a select group of people, I think you could exchange some of the overwhelming noise for depth and interest. If I could use Facebook as both a hub for identity (a profile) and a way for precise focused communication (as opposed to the current broadcast oriented model), without the distraction of everything else, I&amp;#8217;d consider that a step in the right direction.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;On the other side of things, there&amp;#8217;s also a requirement for discipline on my end. I&amp;#8217;m the arbiter of my Facebook production and consumption. Facebook may not be ideal, but wishing for an ideal tool is somewhat pointless and indicative of laziness*. Perhaps the best way to use Facebook is to stop endlessly checking and updating it, and instead filter things from behind the keyboard.&lt;/p&gt;

They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It&amp;#8217;s yours to take, re-arrange, and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don&amp;#8217;t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don&amp;#8217;t [ever] start asking for theirs.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;&amp;#8230;and here we&lt;/em&gt; go.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;I love this; it resonates with me so perfectly. I don&amp;#8217;t know if I&amp;#8217;m really entitled to that opinion, myself being as much of consumer as anyone, but fuck, it still feels good to hear someone say it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I remember taking &lt;em&gt;Advertising &amp;amp; Culture&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Corporate Identity &lt;/em&gt;in college, and the majority of my rants shared a similar foundation to Banksy&amp;#8217;s above: namely, that there is no implicit righteousness to what just-so-happens to be the &lt;strong&gt;popular&lt;/strong&gt; idea. The way I see it, Banksy takes this truth and concludes that the lack of righteousness equates to a lack of authority, and therefore any rules and regulations based on said authority are null and void. I agree wholeheartedly.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A slightly different conversation that I think is also worth having is the nature of this virus&amp;#8217;s origin. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I don&amp;#8217;t believe the objectifying, materialistic, stereotyping media is the product of some malicious overlord, cackling in his mansion. &amp;#8220;The Man&amp;#8221; is a construct, more so than a person. Instead, I think we &amp;#8212; the collective &amp;#8212; watch and listen to advertising and accept it as being acceptable, even if it doesn&amp;#8217;t line up with our morals. And then, when it comes time to create the next generation of ads, that same set of people gets drafted to do the deed. Consumers and producers are not mutually exclusive. The advertisers own ipads, too. Yet, at least in my own naive experience in the field, we tend to market toward what we think the majority of people accept as ideal, as opposed to what we &lt;em&gt;know &lt;/em&gt;to be ideal, what we know to be the truth. It&amp;#8217;s like we&amp;#8217;re afraid to market the truth, because we think the people on the other side of the television screen are too stupid to handle it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Reminder: insert paul rand plug here. Innovation through bold, explicit, and truly unique branding.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Going back to Banksy&amp;#8217;s blurb above: even if we got to the point where 100% of marketers were trying demonstrate truth-in-advertising, I still don&amp;#8217;t think that would give them the authority to shove a message down our throats, unreciprocated. You still have the right to &amp;#8216;throw the rock back&amp;#8217; sort of speak. I&amp;#8217;m just saying the message is all-too-often the proverbial rock because of this unchecked recursion of perverted ideals. Back to the point&amp;#8230; &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Granted, this slice of the pie is slowly fading, as the stage for marketing grows smaller in size and higher in count; and as higher quality and more ethical advertising gets cast in the place of the behemoth jack-of-all-trades ads of mass broadcasting. In the macro-scope of things, this paradigm shift is dramatic and obvious. For example, Red Bull has transitioned from poorly drawn cartoons ranting about how the drink &amp;#8220;gives you wings&amp;#8221;, to showing me videos of extreme sports athletes doing awesome things. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But in the practical space, this dichotomy lives on. Sitting around the round table, ping-ponging ideas back and forth still breeds more cliched and will-be-cliched ideas than ever, and I think it&amp;#8217;s in this space, where you truly see why advertising is a craft; a skill to be honed and mastered, like any other.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Because master advertisers cut through the shallowness of it all. They see that in order for a campaign to be successful, it has to be real; and to build a narrative that people can accept as real, you have to be truthful. Lies aren&amp;#8217;t maintainable and will eventually become noise, like played out radio music or whatever.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#8217;m not sure if any firm truly employees this strategy, as money has skewed a lot. Maybe the khan academy, or the bill-and-malinda gets foundation&amp;#8230; &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;My buddy Charlie and I have been sending videos of BASE jumpers, skydivers, and wing-suit fliers &amp;#8212; pretty much anything involving terminal velocity, gravity, and a parachute &amp;#8212; back and forth to one another, for the past 6 months or so. In print, it&amp;#8217;s always been the next rung in the ladder. We&amp;#8217;ve done gnarly things with the snow, wind, and waves, so gravity at 13,000 feet was the next logical progression. That being said, the hypothetical instant messaging of two extreme-oriented dudes and the reality-based shock of actually planning such an adventure, are two &lt;strong&gt;very different &lt;/strong&gt;things.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I am terrified of heights; &lt;em&gt;or at least, that&amp;#8217;s what I always thought.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;On skis, I can hit pretty large jumps. The two biggest booters I ever hit were the 2010-11 Dew Tour jumps at Mount Snow, which were 60 and 70 feet respectively. With those jumps, you&amp;#8217;re in the air a decent amount of time and completely at the mercy of your own ability.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;On a kite, I&amp;#8217;ve boosted 10-15 feet at a time.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When you&amp;#8217;re in the moment and committed, neither of these endeavours seem so daunting or that high, and even if they did, they only last 2 to 3 seconds, max.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But skydiving&amp;#8230; with that, you&amp;#8217;re in the air&amp;#8230; &lt;em&gt;eh em&amp;#8230; &lt;/em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;high &lt;/strong&gt;in the air for a bit under 10 minutes. Just the idea of such a long hang time gave me the mental wiggle room to think of every possible disaster possible, and it&amp;#8217;s always made skydiving unapproachable for me.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There&amp;#8217;s no way to ease into it. No way to work you&amp;#8217;re way up from something smaller. It&amp;#8217;s go big, or nothing&amp;#8230;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Well, needless to say, when Charlie called me up two weeks ago and said we were booked, I was nervous. I drove up to New Paltz, NY not knowing what to expect. The day before the jump I was entranced by the idea. I meditated on it. I paced. I bugged out with excitement and anxiety. And then the morning came and we were finally off to the dropzone. We get there, and the girl behind the desk said it was too cloudy, sorry, and that we&amp;#8217;d have to come back another time. I was simultaneously relieved and disappointed. And then, just as we were walking back to the car, she tells us the jump was back on&amp;#8230; only to let us down again.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#8217;m pretty sure your heart is not supposed to do the kind of gymnastics I put it through that day. Those moments just prior to commitment are the most tense and jagged. But they&amp;#8217;re also indicative of you being on the right path&amp;#8230; &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;On one hand, I need to do this before I die, if not only once. Until I do, I will be forever disappointed in myself for not taking advantage of the one life I know I have. On the other hand, I have to get over this incredible mental barrier of fear and in-the-moment resistance to do so.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Fast forward a week later, to today (4.7.2012). I booked and planned our dive for 9:30 in the morning out in eastern Long Island, NY. This time, things were different. Prior to the day of the jump, I started really digging down into my fear until I became an expert on its nuances. The meaning of the phrase &amp;#8220;There&amp;#8217;s nothing to fear but fear itself&amp;#8221; revealed itself to me. I started to think that, yes, there will be typical physical fear: my body is going to sweat and my heart is going to beat, both more than usual. But it&amp;#8217;s when you start adding meaning to these things, and let them build into a feedback loop of anxiety, that you become crippled. Don&amp;#8217;t do that, and you&amp;#8217;re set.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;With that realization made, I drove out to our dive nervous, but ready for anything.  Just prior to our getting on the plane I was amped. In the plane, I was awed and ready, and even when people started jumping out the plane, I knew that I&amp;#8217;d be &amp;#8212; mentally, at that moment &amp;#8212; o.k.. In fact, I was joking around and high-fiving people; by the time I got to the bay door, I was itching to get out.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Ironic, much? &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And then I was in the air, and none of it mattered a bit, one way or the other.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Fuck fear; thought in general was not something I was occupied with. The world was rushing by me and, after hitting terminal velocity, gravity didn&amp;#8217;t really exist. I was in a dream. I was going faster than I ever had before (sans mechanical assistance), with the most incredible view ta&amp;#8217; boot. I&amp;#8217;d say more, but when I said &amp;#8216;thought&amp;#8217; wasn&amp;#8217;t something I was taking part in, I meant it. Every sense was so overwhelmed; I remember literally thinking that falling all the way to the ground wouldn&amp;#8217;t be the worst way to go. It was bliss. No fear. All &lt;em&gt;now&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Then my tandem instructor pulled the ripcord, and things became even more surreal. It wasn&amp;#8217;t violent or jerky, like I expected, but actually a pretty mellow deceleration, the result of which is real-life flying. When you&amp;#8217;re falling, there&amp;#8217;s no real control or direction (other than down); you&amp;#8217;re just falling. But when you&amp;#8217;re under the &amp;#8216;chute, you can steer, and that&amp;#8217;s when you feel like a bird.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I had my arms out like wings, and took the reigns for a little bit, too. I remember saying, &amp;#8220;There is absolutely nothing wrong with this&amp;#8221; over and over again, as the euphoria of the moment began to contrast with my now returning thoughts; this was &lt;em&gt;supposed&lt;/em&gt; to be scary, but was instead the most excellent thing I could possible be doing. My instructor was asking me how I liked it and pointing to where we&amp;#8217;d land. And like that it was over.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I hit the ground like a feather &amp;#8212; it&amp;#8217;s amazing what parachutes do &amp;#8212; and proceeded to laugh and squirm uncontrollably in giddy pleasure for a few minutes. I found Charlie, we did a bro-mantic chest bump, hugged everyone in a hundred foot radius, and then walked back into the hanger.&lt;/p&gt;

On the subject of scientific theories he wrote: &amp;#8220;Physical concepts are free creations of the human mind, and are not, however it may seem, uniquely determined by the external world.&amp;#8221; In other words: our ideas about how the universe works are merely ideas, and we ought not confuse them with reality. He follows this with an illuminating analogy:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Now, dear reader, you may be wondering just how this might relate to empathy, the purported subject of this blog post. There is a parallel to be drawn: We are all Einstein&amp;#8217;s watches to one another.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You see, the human condition is rigged so that my subjective reality is not yours to experience, and words are often the flimsiest bridges between people. So essentially, we are mysteries to one another. Like Einstein&amp;#8217;s watch, I&amp;#8217;m unable to peer inside of your head to see what makes you tick. So like any good scientist, I collect data, and I test various hypotheses. Eventually I build a model in my head that represents you. Its dimensions and contours fit all the data, and I may be tempted to say that it is you&amp;#8212;but that would be the terminal point of empathy.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;All to often, we confuse others with the ideas we have of them in our heads. Seems innocuous enough; we have evidence to back our ideas up&amp;#8230;it&amp;#8217;s not like we&amp;#8217;re pulling something out of thin air, right? However, if you follow this pseudo-empathy to its extremities, you&amp;#8217;ll find the foundation of all the fucked up racism, homophobia, xenophobia, and just about any other other-phobia in the world.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When you become complacent and satisfied that you know someone, you&amp;#8217;ve lost your curiosity. You&amp;#8217;ve forgotten that the model in your head is just a model in your head, and you&amp;#8217;ve mistaken it with reality. A true scientist is never wholly satisfied with his theory&amp;#8212;regardless of how many data points he has to corroborate it. Just as science has undergone revolution after revolution&amp;#8212;from &amp;#8216;God pulls all the strings&amp;#8217; to Newtonian physics to Relativity and Quantum Mechanics&amp;#8212;our concepts of others should always be open-ended and subject to change, for they are quite capable of undergoing revolutions of their own.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The most exciting aspect of my relationship with my wife has not been the prospect of ever knowing her completely. Rather, it&amp;#8217;s been the perpetual fleshing out and revision of my idea of her. Countless times I&amp;#8217;ve had to scratch off an adjective or bullshit freudian analysis I&amp;#8217;d stuck on her. Countless times I&amp;#8217;ve run into uncharted territory, which has thankfully been mostly beautiful and fascinating. Our relationship has had such success because each of us allows the other&amp;#8217;s being to speak for itself. We do not invent intentions for one another. I don&amp;#8217;t reduce her to a simple sum of forces [genetics + environment + culture + race + personal history] not because I think that the solution to such an equation would be wrong, but because I can&amp;#8217;t pretend to know and grasp all of the intricacies and details of all of those variables. For all intents and purposes, she is Einstein&amp;#8217;s watch to me.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Now, how much do the NPCs really affect you? NPCs are never the story, my friend, they only exist to help you move the story along. Your story.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So if you screw up, or feel awkward, or want to start a conversation with a stranger, then don&amp;#8217;t feel stressed out. Laugh it off, you&amp;#8217;re the protagonist, they&amp;#8217;re just an NPC. They deserve no fucks.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#8217;m telling you this because your story needs to move along. I&amp;#8217;ve been put here by the gods of this narrative for just &lt;strong&gt;one&lt;/strong&gt; purpose, to help you see the truth. &lt;/ul&gt;</description><link>http://blog.adamgeorgiou.com/post/18111019464</link><guid>http://blog.adamgeorgiou.com/post/18111019464</guid><pubDate>Wed, 22 Feb 2012 22:33:00 -0500</pubDate></item><item><title>Breaking Down Some Language; Because Mysterious Doesn't Mean Wise</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;If everything that is discussable can be defined as an instance of a &lt;em&gt;concept&lt;/em&gt;, where we define concept as the encapsulation of many complimentary ideas into a consistently recognizable pattern, then the Zen idea of duality becomes definable. I came across this idea while reading Shunryu Suzuki’s “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind”. He talks about how the mind and body are both eternal and finite, simultaneously; he describes this phenomenon through a metaphor calling mind and body “two sides of the same coin”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;I find this kind of language both confusing, frustrating, and misleading. I also find it ubiquitous, as this wisdom-in-fallacy has become somewhat of a generic style for presenting philosophical information (especially in the Buddhist writings I’ve read).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;I find it confusing, because the metaphor is seemingly contradictory.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I find it frustrating, because, while I agree with the sentiment that meditation trumps reading ten-fold, I still feel like readings can unveil the source of suffering; so to have someone who understands the nature of suffering use language I don’t understand makes me feel like I have an answer stuck on the tip of my tongue.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;And I find it potentially misleading, because when an established school of thought – an authority – starts using incomprehensible language, you run the risk of blind acceptance, where students try to force their experience into a definition, rather than formulate an articulation from their honest observation.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;That being said, when you do stumble upon an understanding that happens to coincide with an existing concept, that concept then thereafter seem obvious, even if prior inspection had you feeling as I describe above.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Anyway, back to the point: mind &amp;amp; body both end and go on forever. I think the understanding to take away here is that the concepts or abstractions that we refer to as mind and body are the sum of many different things. I mean this literally.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Think about the body: it is the &lt;em&gt;thing &lt;/em&gt;that we best relate our physical presence with; it is the &lt;em&gt;thing&lt;/em&gt; composed of organs, cells, and atoms; it is the &lt;em&gt;thing,&lt;/em&gt; ever changing, moving through time, aging and deforming as it passes the days. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;The same thing applies for the concept of mind: it is the &lt;em&gt;thing&lt;/em&gt; composed of a personality; it is the &lt;em&gt;thing&lt;/em&gt; that has mood; it is the &lt;em&gt;thing&lt;/em&gt; that influences the environment in which it is alive within; it is the &lt;em&gt;thing&lt;/em&gt; that is thinking; and it is one of the &lt;em&gt;things &lt;/em&gt;that is remembered, regardless of whether it is present or not.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;So when we say mind &amp;amp; body both end and don’t end, it’s really a matter of realizing that certain components of each end and don’t end. When we die, the atoms in our body don’t end, but the abstract concept of our physical manifestation is no longer maintainable, by definition. After death, our minds may not do what we traditionally refer to as ‘think’, but the influence we had during our life still lingers. We may not be able to think about a mind that has &lt;em&gt;died&lt;/em&gt; the same way as when it was alive, but we still think about it!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;I think the take away is that the abstractions we hold, collectively, as humans, are empty. They have no substance, but are merely an interpretation of the raw data we consume through observation. So while the abstraction may die, the reality persists, even if we think of the two as synonymous; however, even though they are different, neither is more or less important than the other. That’s what “two sides of the same coin” means; the raw reality cannot be expressed or experienced without an abstraction through which it can live, and the abstractions are void unless they describe some sort of reality.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Where we get in trouble is when we start describing abstraction in terms of other abstraction. Then you run the risk of becoming too worked up in trying to understand and keep track of all the variables at play in your model. We spend 7+ hours at a place where we carefully maintain our social interactions, trying to optimize for very idiosyncratic professional goals, but one thing we all have in common: we all poop. And given the amount of coffee that gets consumed in highly competitive New York firms, I imagine this reality manifests itself quite frequently.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That being said, we don&amp;#8217;t talk about it! I&amp;#8217;m not trying to say that the topic should be the lunchtime conversation of choice, but merely noting that there&amp;#8217;s this common behavior that functions independently of the communication feedback loop that influences so much of the rest of what we do!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So take this one: I go use the toilet; I&amp;#8217;m the only one in the bathroom. As I finish and open the, what is now one of three, empty stalls; another man walks in. I proceed to wash my hands and he takes some paper towel and blows his nose; we are both looking into the mirror, silently. He hesitates at the mirror for about 20 seconds after he throws out his tissue, and the &lt;em&gt;proceeds to walk into the stall I just walked out of. &lt;/em&gt;He knew I had just used the stall, so what was going through his mind? I&amp;#8217;m not saying it&amp;#8217;s right or wrong, but I don&amp;#8217;t like warm toilet seats, do you? I imagine not. &lt;p&gt;But at work, at least for me, the things I search for are often much more nuanced and detailed, and thus seemingly arbitrary.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For instance, I often Google function definitions, sometimes without realizing they&amp;#8217;re from one of my company&amp;#8217;s internal libraries and other times mistakenly all together, thinking I&amp;#8217;m using one of my company&amp;#8217;s internal search tools (which inadvertently happens to interface with Chrome&amp;#8217;s search bar). If you constantly demonstrate this fact to yourself, you will be forever happy. By realizing that anything we can &amp;#8220;know&amp;#8221; is founded on belief, which is itself subjective &amp;#8212; in the sense that it varies from person to person &amp;#8212; then you realize that there is no monopoly on righteousness, ever. All you can ever hope to do is be as happy as possible in the moment. Combine this idea with the realization that everything is in motion, and you come to understand that any interpretation of righteousness has to be fluid or it won&amp;#8217;t work, in the practical sense. So knowing you need to have some sense of whats right and wrong in order to be happy (e.g. killing a police officer will likely make you unhappy for many reasons), and also knowing that everything is in motion, it&amp;#8217;s possible to understand that a lot of the corner cases for what we hold to be true, need to be constantly revaluated. That&amp;#8217;s where boundaries come in. Your boundaries are no more defined than anyone else, so explore yours and respect others! That&amp;#8217;s the key. Then you see that the cynic&amp;#8217;s perspective is bogus. Everyone has the potential to be as &amp;#8220;bad&amp;#8221; or &amp;#8220;good&amp;#8221; as they choose. It&amp;#8217;s not zero sum! With that information, life is fantastic, because in the long run, people are, inclined to pursue happiness. So smile at everyone and feel connected, because it&amp;#8217;s freaking awesome.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;I don&amp;#8217;t even care that this is probably the most obscure thing I&amp;#8217;ve written in a while, I need to get his off my chest. I&amp;#8217;ve been incredibly happy, and it&amp;#8217;s because of this. I feel connected and part of something, along with everyone else that wants to be happy. &lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;I&amp;#8217;m starting to think this assumption isn&amp;#8217;t as true as I once thought. &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For example, one of my favorite sets of musicians is Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Besides the fact that I think their music is pure bottled joy, their live performances have never left me less than hypnotized. What&amp;#8217;s so awesome about their shows is the genuineness they embody. There&amp;#8217;s no scripted dialog, stupid routine, or cheesy &amp;#8220;We love you, New York&amp;#8221;; there&amp;#8217;s just the moving image of happy people, doing their thing with a crowd you&amp;#8217;d think they (Ed Sharpe, et al.) knew personally.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And that&amp;#8217;s where I think the key concept lies; that&amp;#8217;s where the idea of &amp;#8220;&lt;em&gt;the personal&amp;#8221;&lt;/em&gt; breaks down completely. Because as a member of that crowd, I actually feel like I know these people &lt;em&gt;personally&lt;/em&gt;, even if it is just for that night, and who is to say that&amp;#8217;s not a legitimate connection.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Alex Ebert (the lead of Ed Sharpe) couldn&amp;#8217;t remember my name if he wanted to, just due to the sheer massive number of people he meets at every show. In such situations I&amp;#8217;ve discovered that you have to make a choice: either (1) &lt;em&gt;know&lt;/em&gt; that the relationship between you and the band isn&amp;#8217;t personal, and therefore can only mean so much; or (2) throw out the need for &lt;em&gt;personal-ness as a&lt;/em&gt; required criteria, and allow yourself to feel the full force of the moment&amp;#8217;s potential happiness.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Obviously this idea goes beyond Edward Sharpe or even music, but for me it&amp;#8217;s so tightly couple to them, and especially Alex Ebert, because I&amp;#8217;ve personally (in the traditional sense) met him twice, and although I know he couldn&amp;#8217;t possibly remember those experiences with me specifically, the times I&amp;#8217;ve spent with him and his band are some of the happiest memories I have.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Knowing someone&amp;#8217;s name or spending a lot of time with a person are strict formalities that need not exist for an encounter to be emotionally fruitful.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#8217;ve spent more time singing and dancing with Ed Sharpe than I have with nearly 3/4 of people I&amp;#8217;d consider to be in my &lt;em&gt;personal &lt;/em&gt;circle! AND WHO CARES! I don&amp;#8217;t need my personal relationships to be anything they&amp;#8217;re not, nor do I need Ed Sharpe to act any differently. The paradigm should fit reality, not the other way around!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;All of that being said, I think this also sheds some light onto the entire celebrity complex that people, including myself, seem to be so fascinated with. Taking the above concept as a given: I don&amp;#8217;t think it&amp;#8217;s really that much of a privilege to be on either side of the celebrity relationship. If you can get past the boundaries that &amp;#8220;&lt;em&gt;the personal&lt;/em&gt;&amp;#8221; imposes, then either side can enjoy the moment at equal intensity.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Also, while it&amp;#8217;s practical for me to talk about how I (as a member of the crowd) feel about the performers, the idea of how performers see the crowd can be equally as interesting. I imagine this concept of a high quality, impersonal relationship is old news to people like Alex Ebert, his band mates, or any other genuine performer. They experience strong, short lasting, bonds to people they&amp;#8217;ve just met much more frequently than we do, and perhaps even more frequently than they experience personal relationships, quality or otherwise. However, given that, such a perspective might shed some light on why some other performs can be such douchebags on stage.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;While the potential for quality relationship is there, a lot of the time the crowd abuses their partner, the performer, demanding played out music, throwing things on stage, and doing generally anything to feed the confused hedonistic urge for a &lt;em&gt;good time&lt;/em&gt; in a situation they&amp;#8217;ve already predefined as impersonal. In cases like these, the crowd becomes its own beast, acting as if the performer is like some sort of credited vending machine taking a little too long to dispense their made selection; shaking the thing is near instinctual.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I think its because of this that one of my other favorite performers acts like such a dick on stage, yet remains to be so awe inspiring. Neil Young once told a fellow performer who was nervous before a gig to, &amp;#8220;Show them no respect.&amp;#8221; After experiencing Neil&amp;#8217;s own lack of respect for the 4th or 5th time in person, I began to loose faith in my idol. Could such a prolific song writer, who&amp;#8217;s work always carried the themes of compassion and togetherness, really hate people that much? Was he just another phony? I don&amp;#8217;t think so. I think Neil just plays it like he sees it, and in the moment, the crowd &amp;#8212; which is usually much larger than those at Edward Sharpe shows, and thus innately more unruly &amp;#8212; can be just as much a factory of disconnect as it can be pool of mutual happiness. In that case, Neil looks at it (the crowd), recognizes it as an individual in itself, flips it off when it shows him no respect, and does what he came to do &amp;#8212; play music.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Regardless, recognizing the true nature of one&amp;#8217;s involvement in &amp;#8220;the whole&amp;#8221; of things gives you a wholesome perspective on how to act. Allowing myself to let go of all the restrictions I&amp;#8217;ve been indoctrinated with over the years has let me enjoy experiences with a new level of intensity; on the flip side, such a perspective has also let me forgive the mob-mentalitied crowd, as they know not what they do; and lastly, this outlook has given me an understanding of those who react to the mob rather than the individuals its comprised of; it&amp;#8217;s only natural.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So, the obvious conclusion to this little rant? Ed Sharpe should cover a Neil Young song. I&amp;#8217;d give a few suggestions, but I&amp;#8217;d probably end up listing the discography, so surprise me.&lt;/p&gt;

There are also other things you wish to avoid; things that (supposedly) yield short term pleasure, but at the expense of long term suffering.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In order to make progress in either of these endeavors, you need focus, and the only way to gain focus is by practice.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Anything can count as practice; as long as you stay focused on a specific goal and try &amp;#8212; however painstakingly &amp;#8212; to accomplish that goal, you will make progress in honing the skill of true focus.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;By definition, the most low level form of this practice is meditation. To sit and attempt to stay focused on a single, simple, point of interest (e.g. the breath) you progressively learn to focus on a single idea of your own choosing, and at the same time, you learn how to effectively recognize and deal with distractions.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is what you&amp;#8217;ve forgotten. This is what you need to remember.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Competition and Self Reflection&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When you&amp;#8217;re submersed in a population you&amp;#8217;re familiar with, it&amp;#8217;s easy to recognize so called &amp;#8220;mistakes&amp;#8221; other people make because it&amp;#8217;s easy to see yourself in other people. What I&amp;#8217;m learning is that when the opposite occurs &amp;#8212; in other words, when you&amp;#8217;re submersed in a population that completely clashes with your sense of normalcy &amp;#8212; it&amp;#8217;s really difficult to connect, and thus you&amp;#8217;re alone with yourself.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In the former case (New York, for me) I can turn behaving righteously into sort of a game, and the competition of it makes it easier for me to feel content and good. Observing other people doing things with inevitable negative outcomes makes it easier for me to not repeat such behavior in my own life. Conversely, watching people I admire, pushes me to do more with my life.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But in the latter case, I&amp;#8217;m left alone with myself (metaphorically speaking), and mistakes go unrecognized because of my ego and lack of setting. Aspirations are also harder to grasp for similar reasons.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Both cases leave me lost in my thoughts, and I end up getting caught up in these cycles of hate and angst due to my lack of regiment or comfort. Combine this with the lack of close relationships given the setting and you find yourself with no one to call you out of your own darkness.&lt;/p&gt;

Since then, the decision has been both highly difficult to stick to and increasingly interesting to contemplate, especially as I make it further than I ever thought I would. By the time I got to Thailand, multiplied by all the other self-reflection I was doing, drinking became the topic of choice for a car ride brain-dump, which is what I&amp;#8217;m posting here. &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;I should also note that I&amp;#8217;ve added to this opinion since I wrote the following short essay, but in an effort to stay honest to the title of these posts, I&amp;#8217;m only going to fix grammatical errors, and not change the content.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Drinking&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The reason I&amp;#8217;m not drinking is because most of the time it&amp;#8217;s destrctive and only ever considered fun due to its (usually) being attached to situations that would be fun even without alcohol. In light of that realization, I think the cravings I&amp;#8217;ve been having to drink are somewhat illusory, based on this false mental-image of past goodtimes being the result of drinking; in hindsight, such moments were probably fun because of their social/active setting.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As of late though, I&amp;#8217;ve started to think that the so called &amp;#8220;responsible&amp;#8221; style of drinking could be potentially neutral, but even so, I still think my abstinence is a good chance to do some positive influence for the people that I hang out with, as well as a way to allow myself to focus on doing bigger and better things with my time and subsequently my life.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Perhaps if I gauge it honestly and frequently, I&amp;#8217;ll discover that the opportune time to drink (for me) will never come.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Here are some of the situations I&amp;#8217;ve thought about:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Concerts:&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Fun either way. I&amp;#8217;ve already trained myself to listen and love music using nothing more than my sober senses and rad dance moves.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Backyard Conversation:&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;More of a habit than an enhancement. If anything, I think that attaching drinking to those countless number of nights ended up justifying a very lazy and unstimulating activity. Should my friends, family, and I not have had drinking to make it acceptable, I&amp;#8217;m pretty sure those opportunities would&amp;#8217;ve been taken advantage of in much more interesting ways.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Parties:&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Can be fun either way, but honestly they tend to be better when there&amp;#8217;s no inhibition (i.e. when drinking). More often than not though, (certain) parties follow a pretty predictably path of drinking games and redundant conversation. Bars are even worse. In these cases drinking is not necessary, and is often just an excuse to keep the uninspired, cyclical wait-till-weekend-get-fucked-up lifestyle going. However, in fresh party scenarios (e.g. ones with new people and activities) I think it can be good to make yourself less reserved around strangers and turn what would otherwise be a cautious self-conscious night into a blast. However, like concerts, I think this skill could absolutely be developed to work without alcohol; perhaps, it could even be improved since the latter is an active pursuit, whereas drinking is sort of passive, and thus has a biological ceiling (i.e. tolerance). In the end I still think parties lack the justification necessary to make me think of my own alcohol use as reasonable.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Grief:&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Prolongs acceptance.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Tradition:&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Still bad, but the benefits of keeping the community together by following tradition may outweigh the negatives. For example, not taking a shot of Johnny Walker during hunting season might be disrespectful and thus ruin the cohesion of the club for a moment.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3&gt;Taste Appreciation:&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not too bad in moderation, but a very slippery slope when your trying to NOT make excuses to drink in the former settings. I&amp;#8217;ve also found it really hard to guage the difference between a craving and a passion, in this context.&lt;/p&gt;</description><link>http://blog.adamgeorgiou.com/post/7974276662</link><guid>http://blog.adamgeorgiou.com/post/7974276662</guid><pubDate>Sat, 23 Jul 2011 12:48:00 -0400</pubDate></item><item><title>Thailand Notes (Part 2)</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Everything Is Linked To Everything.&lt;/strong&gt; That&amp;#8217;s karma and I believe in it, but that doesn&amp;#8217;t mean that every action has a &lt;span&gt;significant&lt;/span&gt; correlation to every other subsequent action. Wishing something might happen and actually having that something happen may in fact have some (whatever little) correlation, but that doesn&amp;#8217;t mean - all other conditions the same - if you didn&amp;#8217;t wish for it to happen, that result wouldn&amp;#8217;t occur anyway. There could be a much more correlated action tied to that reaction, and the degree to which two things are related is the way we define practical cause and effect.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It&amp;#8217;s by this magnitude of correlation between actions that we gauge the world. The definition doesn&amp;#8217;t support the pseudo-scientific and often emotional misinterpreting of small correlation as significant reasoning behind an effect. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Believing in karma doesn&amp;#8217;t absolve you from looking at reality as granularly and critically as possible. Further more, by the same logic, believing that good begets good and bad begets bad doesn&amp;#8217;t mean you can help an old lady cross the road and expect to win the lottery. Good and bad are subjective and can only be applied to a cause-and-effect analysis &lt;em&gt;after&lt;/em&gt; the metrics have been collected. In other words, if you measure all the correlations between a set of actions and then observe that two are related, it&amp;#8217;s only then that you can deicde wether or not they&amp;#8217;re good or bad, and at that point your arguing opinion. It&amp;#8217;s irrelevant.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;So while in Thailand, I did a lot of self-reflection; went through a lot of experiences that tested my endurance, both physically and mentally; and also spent a lot of time traveling in the car. Combined, these things lead to a lot of brain-dumps which &amp;#8212; thanks to my Uncle Frank for his graduation-gifted iPad &amp;#8212; I was able to write down. I think they might interest some people, plus I&amp;#8217;d like to refine their grammar and structure, as well store the ideas somewhere more persistent than the iPad&amp;#8217;s local hard drive. So, plan-to-be: I&amp;#8217;m going to go through each of these notes one by one and post them on this blog.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Part 1 - Untitled&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You begin to realize that it&amp;#8217;s your mind which makes things persist. Bad feelings, urges, and cravings on the experiential level are more often than not momentary pangs of vibration. Our mind takes these pangs as signals to &lt;em&gt;start&lt;/em&gt; &lt;em&gt;thinking&lt;/em&gt; about something, which then usually leads to an obsessive cycle of want.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For example, I want to leave, I want a beer, I want a burger, I want this turbulence to stop. If you take the time to observe the mind this becomes more and more apparent, and it&amp;#8217;s this realization that allows one&amp;#8217;s self to be liberated from said cycles (and thus their painful side effects). Note, I&amp;#8217;m talking from a practical perspective; in other words, you&amp;#8217;re not going to be able to lift a 10 ton boulder by noting and not reacting to the persistent pain in your arms and body as you try, but you may be able to stop that wrenching fear of &amp;#8220;x&amp;#8221;, etc.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As you develop this skill to recognize true sensation without reacting to it, suffering dissipates. But, at some point you might think you&amp;#8217;ve eradicated all of it and then happen to go through a rought day. This is &lt;strong&gt;NOT&lt;/strong&gt; significant of a failure in you or the practice, but merely a sensation you have not yet come accross and therefore have not reconditioned yourself to. The same can happen in the opposite direction as well: an unexpected happiness is always going to be short lived and ultimately distracting if you don&amp;#8217;t pay attention to the sensations that are supposedly generating (or more realistically, are associated with) that happiness.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Once it&amp;#8217;s gone, unless you&amp;#8217;re honest with yourself about what you were actually feeling, it&amp;#8217;s very easy to become sad at the idea that you can&amp;#8217;t get that feeling back or frustrated in an effort trying to.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Consistency in practice is also important because it ensures conditionings don&amp;#8217;t reform to sensations that have already been noticed, redefined, or eradicated.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Another thing&amp;#8230;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The brain tends to implement this predictive caching scheme, assuming if a sensation has been felt at one point in time, unless it is responded to, the sensation will probably still be there in the next moment, so it&amp;#8217;s safe to assume you don&amp;#8217;t have to observe for it again. This is what was once normal for me. However, if you make an effort to actively and continuously query for sensation, you get a more precise (and often more accurate) view of what&amp;#8217;s actually going on &amp;#8212; a finer self-resolution, if you will &amp;#8212; which in the long run gives you a clearer view of truth and thus the way out of suffering via the above practice.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This has been especially practical for me when dealing with fear. Turbulence hits, my heart jumps, but I immediately reevaluate myself afterword, with an effort only to keep my mind still, and I go back to normal, neutral, receptive me. Before being observant I would&amp;#8217;ve played through many different scenarios of how the plane would crash soon and I would die in a horrifying fall, in the end making myself extremely stressed and anxious for no reason. Now I circumvent that infinite (and pointless) escalation cycle and just continue on with my life.
